Enfleshing Witness

allspeakersquare4.0.jpg

We believe in a God made known in bodies — a God who was made flesh in a brown-bodied Palestinian Jewish man, a God who is made flesh in the diverse expression of witness the world over. Yet too many conferences and gatherings center the voices, experience, and expectations of white people.

What does it look like when we create a space for people of color:

  • To enflesh our witness for and from our own communities?

  • To speak aloud the stories of our ancestors and elders?

  • To believe the kingdom of God is a pursuit of solidarity and coalition not in spite of our differences but because of the complexity of those differences?

  • To embody different ways and expressions of knowing?

In a short-form, intentionally crafted gathering, you will encounter distinct voices, speaking from their own communities, enfleshing witness for this moment of challenge and creativity in the church and in the world. Between these witnesses, you will encounter liturgical experiments and collaborations to help digest the call of the divine.

We invite preachers, storytellers, activists, and community leaders of color to perhaps hear some of your own stories in the pieces shared. White leaders are welcome but expected to participate with a posture of overhearing the witness rather than expecting it is for you.

The event is free to attend virtually and we invite support from congregations and institutions to form in-person viewing gatherings for conversation and creative response. Institutional supporters will receive bonus material and a discussion guide for facilitating conversation following the gathering. Mutuality groups for people of color interested in connecting and continuing the conversation will be provided immediately following the event for those who wish to participate.
