Enfleshing Witness 2022: On-Demand

About Enfleshing Witness

We believe in a God made known in bodies — a God who was made flesh in a brown-bodied Palestinian Jewish man, a God who is made flesh in the diverse expression of witness the world over. Yet too many conferences and gatherings center the voices, experience, and expectations of white people.

What does it look like when we create a space for people of color:

  • To enflesh our witness for and from our own communities?

  • To speak aloud the stories of our ancestors and elders?

  • To believe the kingdom of God is a pursuit of solidarity and coalition not in spite of our differences but because of the complexity of those differences?

  • To embody different ways and expressions of knowing?

Format

In a short-form, intentionally crafted gathering, you will encounter distinct voices, speaking from their own communities, enfleshing witness for this moment of challenge and creativity in the church and in the world. Between these witnesses, you will encounter liturgical experiments and collaborations to help digest the call of the divine.

Audience

We invite preachers, storytellers, activists, and community leaders of color to perhaps hear some of your own stories in the pieces shared. White leaders are welcome but expected to participate with a posture of overhearing the witness rather than expecting it is for you. Mutuality groups for people of color interested in connecting and continuing the conversation will be provided immediately following the event for those who wish to participate.

2022 Theme: Homegoing

Over the course of two days we will witness creatives, storytellers, musicians, preachers, poets, teachers enflesh the meaning of grief and hopeful longing as a practice of homegoing. We long to experience, to remember, to revive, to breathe the traditions of those places that ground us, sing to us, and hold us.

As we internally and externally wail and lament the brokenness of the world. We gather to attend to this grief because Jesus incarnated it as more than an emotion that emerges in the midst of tragedy and loss, but also as something inevitable, multilayered, and ultimately, a movement connected to love. After all, grief can be funded by a hope for new life, lament by a belief in a promise of a transformed world.

About Nadia Bolz-Weber

New York Times bestselling author Reverend Nadia Bolz-Weber has been called “a pastor for America’s outsiders” (BBC). She will be the first to attest that she doesn’t look like most people’s idea of a pastor, but the community of faith she founded in Denver, Colorado—House for All Sinners and Saints—is a haven for a diverse community seeking affirmation and acceptance.

Lent in a Box

Lent comes every year, even this year.
Perhaps it’s your favorite task to come up with a study or worship series to bring the congregation.
Or maybe you dread it and are always looking for something better to do.
Either way, we’ve got you covered.

Join Church Anew for a one-day seminar where we will learn from Old Testament scholar and Psalm expert, Rev. Dr. Rolf Jacobson. We will provide you with everything you need for a successful Lenten series on Psalm 23, one of the most beloved and widely memorized pieces of scripture. You will receive sermon ideas, bulletin covers, music suggestions, and a ready-made Lenten devotional to share with your congregation.

At the in-person gathering, you will also have a chance to engage in authentic conversation and mutual support with other church leaders. We’ll ask the honest questions about what it looks like to be the church today and wonder together about how God might be leading us in this moment.

As a virtual attendee, you will receive access to worship and keynote address, all of the Lent planning materials, and we will provide zoom rooms for mutual conversation and support.

One Year Changed: Faith in Pandemic

OYC-9-headshot.png

A ready-made virtual Lenten retreat for you.

In this online retreat format, gather with people of faith to ponder how we might be moved into a different sort of spirituality this Lent. What have we let fall that we will never pick up again? What practices have emerged that may be meaningful far into the future?

With seven-minute talks from faith leaders, activists, and artists, we will memorialize the way this year has shaped us. Together we will spend time in reflection and consider how the Spirit might be moving us in this moment.

Christ | Christmas | Covid

CCC Headshot Updated.png

In a time of global pandemic, unprecedented civic unrest, political polarization, where can we find spiritual ground? The answer of course is the most simple: Jesus Christ.

Celebrating Christmas 2020 and the birth of Jesus will be full of all sorts of grief. We are grieving lost routines and lost traditions. We are grieving the loss of loved ones and the loss of civil discourse. Jesus was born in such a time as this and is born for such a time as this. Featuring provocative, imaginative, and engaging short talks from both world-renowned speakers and emerging voices, Christ | Christmas | Covid will provide space to grieve and lament, while reclaiming the prophetic hope of this season.

Gift option now available at checkout.

To continue to nurture faith and provide resources to congregations, we will produce a daily Advent devotional featuring both local pastors and national Christian leaders that will help people rediscover spiritual practice that connects to their daily lives. Finally, for a modest fee that will help to cover our costs, we will make available all of the talks so that entire congregations can use this resource in the days leading up to Christmas 2020.

Being Church Today

August 17 | 10:30 am Central Time

The murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody; clear disparities in healthcare that reveal ongoing inequities with COVID-19 deaths; political polarization that prevents real relationship, let alone legislative problem-solving; crippling unemployment numbers; impossible wealth disparity; pressing catastrophe from global climate change; the list could go on and on.

God is calling the church into the public square, into the halls of power, and alongside the voices protesting on the streets.

But how? And to what end?

Church Anew has gathered diverse set of nationally recognized thought leaders to speak, in short form, to how the church can lead in a time like this. These keynote speakers will amplify the voices of local leaders from the Minneapolis area, who will share stories of how the church is leading in our own context, particularly in response to systemic racism in our communities. We expect this digital conference to challenge and provoke participants so that church leaders from all over the nation can reclaim the immediacy and necessity of our ministry in a time like this.

Telling the (Old) Story in New Ways
Jan
27
to Jan 28

Telling the (Old) Story in New Ways

Story is at the center of our world, from the relational stories told on social media to the carefully crafted advertisement narratives and immersive stories on television, streaming services, and on the big screen. The church has a rich story to tell, but we don’t always do the best job sharing this story in media that are constantly changing. For two days you will be immersed in story work, with keynotes that will inspire you to develop your own story and learn the stories of others, workshops that will help you build skills for storytelling in a digital age, and time to connect with other storytellers to hone your craft. Participants will walk away with:

  • newfound inspiration for the rich story that we have to share

  • practical skills for storytelling, both in person and digitally

  • a network of storytellers who are honing their craft and building community around God’s story of liberation for the world

Keynote presentations will provide inspiration and workshops will enable you to build skills for leadership.

As the pace of change in our world rapidly increases, the church needs to take stock of where to adapt and where to remain rooted through transition. This activity is at the center of the church in this time and place. We invite you to spend two days with fellow travelers along the way, wondering about the call of the church today. With keynote speakers, engaging workshop leaders, and stimulating conversation with peers, participants will walk away with:

  • ideas for ministry in a time of adaptive change

  • a network of fellow leaders committed to creativity and innovation

  • a refreshed vision for leadership in your context

Keynote presentations will provide inspiration and workshops will enable you to build skills for leadership.

Keynote Speaker, Tod Bolsinger, author of Canoeing the Mountains: Christian Leadership in Uncharted Territory and Vice President for Vocation and Formation at Fuller Seminary, led us through a series of conversations about sustainable transformation in congregational context. We heard from local leaders who are working adaptive change in rural, urban, and suburban contexts about signs of promise and hope in the local congregations. In workshop and facilitated conversation, we explored ways to seek adaptive change in our own contexts.

Preaching in Series

CanoeingTheMountains_1920x768.jpg

Keynote Speaker, Lilian Daniel, author of Tired of Apologizing for a Church I Don’t Belong To and When Spiritual But Not Religious Is Not Enough, helped us imagine Sunday worship services as a time to engage people in the vital education of Christian community. Practicing preachers shared insights on designing sermon series and led workshops on topics that equipped people to develop their own series. Facilitated conversation and imagining helped develop a working list of preaching topics and ways to engage the worshiping community in this work. Further keynote presentations from Dr. Karoline Lewis helped us ground our proclamation in biblical narrative and Jeff Peterson, VP of Marketing for Jostens, gave us marketing tools to tell the stories of our congregations and ultimately the gospel story that compels us all.
